Florida Private Provider Statute
In 2002, the Florida Legislature created Section 553.791 of the Florida Statutes titled “Alternative plans review and inspection”. The statute enables the fee owner of a building or structure, or the fee owner’s contractor, to use a private provider to provide plans review or the required building inspections, or both, in lieu of the local jurisdiction. The objective of the private provider option is to supplement the plans review and inspection resources of the local jurisdictions. Some local governments need the relief due to high growth rates, while others need the additional expertise.
