A global standard for drilling technology and inspection must be comprehensive, technically sound, easy to implement and flexible enough to adjust to a changing industry. In the early years of Bureau Veritas, the industry lacked these standards for downhole drilling tools so we embarked on a project sponsored by 12 operating companies who also recognized the need. In 1992 Bureau Veritas introduced the first edition of Standard DS-1® and distributed 16,000 copies.
As the industry developed and changed, a second edition was published in 1998. The standard was sponsored by 37 companies comprising operators and service, rental and inspection companies. More than 10,000 copies of this new edition were distributed worldwide as the DS-1 became accepted as the global standard for drilling equipment specifications and quality assurance. Since that time the engineering staff at Bureau Veritas has continued to keep pace with the industry and released 3rd and 4th editions, the latter published in 2012 covering new manufacturing techniques, inspection, and design for specialty tools.
With our many years of experience in analyzing drill string component performance Bureau Veritas is uniquely qualified to provide recommendations on drilling operational procedures, no matter how complex. By continuing to expand the content of our standards as the industry develops and moves into ever more challenging environments, we will remain on the cutting edge of drilling technology for the foreseeable future.
