Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOP)

Business Challenge

Hazard & Operability Study (HAZOP) ConsultationRisk assessment and hazard studies are a required element of facility design,
construction, and operation. Industrial licensing authorizes and insurance companies establish these requirements to ensure that companies are working to minimize possible dangers to staff and equipment and ensure that everything is operating according to the original design intent.

These authorities require companies to fully record their hazard studies and document the actions taken to correct any issues. On top of that, these hazard and operability studies must be subject to management audit and approval. For many companies, it can be a challenge to keep on top of all the requirements.

What is HAZOP?

A Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOP) is a well-established and structured team-based method of identifying hazards at the point of process design completion, or when new modifications are being planned. The investigation process will determine how the system or the current processes have begun to deviate from the status quo. It is often used in chemical and petroleum industries to ensure the plants perform more efficiently and reliably.

The technique for performing the study involves a detailed examination of the process and engineering intention of new or existing facilities. The goal is to assess any potential hazards that might result from operations outside the original intent of the design or through the malfunction of individual items of equipment.

When the Hazard and Operability Study is complete, the final reports will show how these hazards can impact the facility as a whole, and what a company can do to minimize these effects.

HAZOP studies need to be conducted by an experienced facilitator and team. In an oil and gas project, for example, that team would need to have personnel from Process, Instruments, machines, Project Engineering, and Operations. Depending on the individual needs of the client, though, it might also require the involvement of process technologists, environmental specialists, and corporate Health & Safety and Environment (HSE) staff.

Why Choose Bureau Veritas?

A Global Network of Specialists
Bureau Veritas has planned, managed, delivered, and reported hundreds of HAZOP studies throughout the world. We have several locations from which we can deploy the teams and specialists who can provide the studies and reports you need as quickly as possible.

Our Commitment to Your Success
In many cases, these studies will be followed by response tracking and validation to help ensure that the project is sufficiently acceptable for design completion, procurement, and construction.
Services for Every Phase of Plant Design
Bureau Veritas has experience in providing personnel to participate in HAZOP studies as engineer or HSE specialist when that is appropriate to the client or designer. We offer HAZOP services across all phases of plant design, from the initial feasibility to detailed design, construction, and commissioning. We can also provide the necessary study recording and reporting so we can help minimize the administrative burdens on the client.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

  • How long does a HAZOP study take?

Installing an oil & gas unit on an existing site might take 5 or 6 hours to study each P&ID (piping & instrumentation diagram). Installing a major new unit on an existing refinery or of the topsides on an offshore platform could require 6 to 8 weeks.

  • Can you advise us what types of hazard study and risk assessment are required for our project and our location?

Yes. Our global network lets us advise clients on legislative requirements, legislative changes, and good practice compliance in most parts of the world.
