Protecting against chemical hazards

To reassure and protect employees, the general public and the environment from potential hazards linked to the manufacturing and usage of chemicals, responsible chemical industry companies take extra measures to ensure safety.  Two industry-appropriate standards exist and can be used stand-alone or combined.

Responsible Care® (RCMS/RC14001), has been in existence since 1988 and was launched by the American Chemistry Council (ACC).  By means of an industry-wide framework comprising guiding principles and codes of management practices, companies use Responsible Care® as a tool to improve the responsible management of chemicals.

The second standard is the international standard for environmental management systems (ISO 14001).  It was launched by the International Standard Organization in 1996 and has since been adopted by more than 100 countries (including the U.S.) as their national standard for environmental management.
