  • 2BSvs - BIOMASS AND BIOFUELS SUSTAINABILITY VERIFICATION

    Print PageTell Friend

Demonstrate the sustainability of biomass and biofuels.

Biomass and biofuels have been heavily promoted to be part of the solution to mitigate climate change, as well as anticipate the scarcity of fossil fuels in the future. Biomass is biological material from living or recently living organisms that can be either used directly, such as plant matter that generates electricity or heat, or converted into other energy products such as biofuels. Biofuel products including biodiesel and bioethanol that can be used as liquid fuel for vehicles, are often derived from sugar, starch, vegetable oil and animal fats and offer potentially greater greenhouse gas emission savings.  Through financial incentives, governments in Europe, the United States, Brazil and other countries are setting high targets for the promotion and use of biofuels in the coming years.

However, various social, economic and environmental issues with biofuel production and use have recently caught the public's attention and heightened the need for biomass and biofuel sustainability assurance. Bureau Veritas Certification can evaluate the sustainability of the biomass against 2BSvs, a voluntary certification scheme designed to help organizations throughout the supply chain meet regulatory requirements such as the European Union's Directive 2009/28/EC.
