|The Legionella bacteria is believed to be the indoor building contaminant most likely to result in mortality. Often perceived as rare, Legionnaires’ disease is more common than many health and safety professionals recognize. Up to 25,000 cases of Legionnaires’ disease occur every year in the United States*. The human and financial costs associated with an outbreak, or even an isolated case, greatly exceed $1 Million dollars… yet, the cost of prevention is mere pennies in comparison.|

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
What is Legionella?
Legionella is a naturally occurring organism commonly found in lakes, rivers and soils — but generally is not pervasive enough to result in disease from these sources. The bacterium derives its name from its identification with Legionnaires' disease, or Legionellosis, an infection of the lungs and form of pneumonia.
Legionnaires' disease, which principally affects adults, has a typical incubation period of 2 to 10 days. It is frequently missed in diagnosis because it is not easily distinguished from other forms of pneumonia. Around 10% to 15% of individuals with Legionnaire’s Disease are reported to die from it each year, despite the availability of appropriate antibiotic treatment.
Is Legionnaires’ disease contagious?
Legionnaires’ disease is not contagious. Disease transmission typically occurs via inhalation and/or aspiration. An individual may inhale aerosols, fine sprays, mists or other microscopic droplets of water contaminated with Legionella, providing direct access into the lungs.
